Book of the month: MARCH

Dear book lovers,

It is with utmost joy that I welcome you to the month of March . I’m pretty sure you all had an interesting February just like I did. As all book lovers know

Well its time to reveal the book of the month…Drum roll please… The book of the month for March is

Big Little Lies is written by Liane Moriarty and  was published by Penguin in July 2014.  The novel follows the life of three different mothers  including a single mom (Madeline, Celeste and Jane) in the fictional Pirriwee Peninsula near Sydney, Australia.

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She's funny, and passionate, remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have just moved into her beloved beach side community and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline's youngest child. And to top it all off, Madeline's teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline;s ex-husband over her.

Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn't be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the queen and king of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.

New to town, single mom Janis so  young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.

There's drinking, arguments and violence and murder at the school trivia night....

The book deals  with the  societal vices of bullying and domestic violence while maintaining a humorous tone.

My favorite expression from this novel is  “Oh, Calamity”  According to the novel, “Oh Calamity”,  was a line from a children’s book that Madeline used to read to her son Fred when he was little.

Big Little Lies was adapted by HBO for a  television miniseries of the same title and started airing on February 19th 2017. The miniseries is star studded with the likes of  Reese Witherspoon who plays Madeline , Nicole Kidman who plays Celeste and Shailene Woodley plays Jane from the novel just to mention a few. But as all book lovers know the book is always better than the movie/ series irrespective of how many stars are in the adaptation.
